Open Gym

Open Gym is for experienced circus artists only - acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, clowns & all manner of professional circus artists are welcome to come train at The Circus Academy during open gym hours.

Adult Aerial Class

Learn aerial hoop, silks, static trapeze and/or corde lisse from a circus professional while gaining strength, flexibility & confidence. We work with each student individually according to their athletic ability, flexibility, stamina & skill level. No experience necessary. Hoopersonic Hula Hoop Class

Hoopercise is an awesome, high-energy hula hoop class focusing on outlining the fundamentals of core hooping while engaging the rest of your body. It is a fun and effective workout like no other! Students participate in specially designed drills and activities to strengthen their existing hoop dance skills or learn them for the first time. At times we will incorporate weights or mix hoop dance with other forms of exercise, so every class feels like a fresh and enjoyable experience!

Perfect for beginners who just want to give it a try, or for experienced hoopers looking to get in a fabulously fun workout! Beginners may drop in at any week. Hoops provided! Also available for purchase but contact Amy in advance.

Poi with Nick Woolsey

The art of swinging things! Poi is a form of dance, where weights on the ends of tethers are swung through rhythmical patterns, with movements often borrowed from other disciplines such as juggling, club swinging, dance, and rhythmic gymnastics. Poi appeals to those who are looking for a dynamic activity that engages both the mind and body. It’s meditative. It’s addictive. Try it!

Sketchy's Hosting Workshop

There is so much talent here in Toronto gracing our stages at comedy, variety, burlesque, music, clown and theatre shows. But how do those hosts in between the acts get started? How do you become one?
Hosting is a fun and rewarding performance experience. This course will take you through exercises to hone your skills on the finer points of hosting. Sure, you could probably find your inner host after hosting a good long while, but why not get a head start NOT suck, ever?

This class will cover:
- Warming up the audience
- Setting the tone
- Defining your host character
- Your relationship with the audience
- Building a running order
- Intros and extros
- Stalling for time
- Engaging the audience
- Handling hosting duties
- What to expect from producers and stage managers

Dave McKay (AKA Sketchy the Clown) is a co-producer and co-host of Lunacy Cabaret and the Toronto Festival of Clowns. He's hosted burlesque shows, music festivals, variety shows, weddings, technical conferences, clown festivals, charity events, comedy shows, political events and awards ceremonies. Dave has studied improv, clown, bouffon, character based narrative, as well as dance, puppetry, slapstick and other weird things that struck his fancy. You may have caught Dave’s latest project - Sketchy for Mayor in the 2014 Toronto mayoral election.

Clown Through Mask with Sue Morrison

Based on the pioneering work of Richard Pochinko, this workshop synthesizes Native American and European clowning traditions in the discovery of the clown. Explore colour, innocence and experience using six clay masks to create your own personal mythology. As the masks are explored, various characters emerge leading you to your clown. Taught by Sue Morrison, Artistic Director of the Theatre Resource Centre.
